Since 2007 the Firefly Foundation has donated $400,000 to The Tanz Centre for Research in Neurodegenerative Diseases to support their work in finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

Center for Research in Neurological Disease (U of T)The CRND at the University of Toronto is a powerhouse at the global forefront of brain disease research.  Led by Professor Peter St George-Hyslop, and internationally pre-eminent scientist, the Tans Centre has made many of the world’s most important discoveries about the genetics of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as key discoveries that have increased our understanding of Parkinson’s and other diseases.

The Tanz Centre is one of the leaders in neurodegenerative disease research publications in the United States and Europe.  The Centre’s articles are heavily cited by researchers and experts, demonstrating the extraordinary impact of its research on these diseases.

The Tanz Centre Discoveries

In the past 25 years, and with funding from donors and granting agencies, Tanz Center researchers have:

  • discovered the five genes associated with Alzheimer’s disease;
  • demonstrated that Alzheimer’s disease in a complex disorder with multiple causes;
  • designed an animal model of Alzheimer’s disease, and essential step in furthering biochemical testing;
  • taken the first steps in developing effective treatments for Alzheimer’s disease in the continuing search for a cure…
